Course Description:

Presents core concepts of community and public health nursing across the life span, utilizing detailed case studies and web based learning activities. Focus: Promotion of community health nursing, public health principles: prevention, health promotion, protective services benefiting various population groups; impact of global health status on national health agenda and community empowerment.

Course Obejctives:
  • Identify the core concepts of community /public health nursing and its relevance to current practice.
  • Explain the aspects of assessment, planning, and management of care for aggregates and communities.
  • Plan processes to enhance health promotion and disease prevention within public and community health settings.
  • Compare and contrast the agencies, regulations, and resources that impact public and community health.
  • Discuss the various roles of community/public health nurses.
  • Examine the roles of the public/community health nurse as health advocate, researcher, care provider and educator.
  • Identify and explain the parameters of a successful community health program including but not limited to: health assessment, patient advocacy, family needs, community outreach, and supportive resources.
  • Discuss the regulations related to child, elder, and family violence and abuse, including prevention, detection, interventions, treatment and reporting requirements.
  • Describe the signs, symptoms, and sequelae of abuse and violence.
  • Analyze the concepts of epidemiologic models and how these are utilized to collect mortality and morbidity data.
  • Develop an action plan to assist home bound individuals in identifying and notifying various agencies in emergency and disasters.
