Course Description:

An introduction to the principles and procedures involved in nursing research; the scientific method and its application to nursing inquiry are emphasized. A student successfully completing this course will possess:
(1) a broad understanding of the process and outcomes of research methodology;
(2) an appreciation of the strengths and limitations of research;
(3) an understanding of the ethical considerations inherent in research;
(4) a solid understanding of typical experimental designs and their application,
(5) statistical techniques utilized in nursing research, and
(6) the ability to evaluate the credibility of typical research oriented publications.

Course Objectives:
  • Access current journal articles on a specific area of study in the field of nursing.
  • Understand the various purposes of research and its' applications.
  • Identify the research questions, research design and the statistics used when presented with a research article.
  • Judge the merits and weaknesses of research studies.
  • Select an appropriate research design and statistic when presented with a research question.
  • Write a summary of a research article including the research question, review of the literature, methodology, type of analysis, results, and conclusions.
  • Write a critique of a research study outlining both strengths and weaknesses.
  • Understand the concepts of reliability and validity in research designs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the following types of studies and appropriate statistic to use: Experimental, Quasi-Experimental, Causal-Comparative, Correlational, Survey, Historical, Case-Study/Single Subject, and Naturalistic.
  • Understand research ethics.
  • Plan and develop outline for a research study.
