Course Description:

This course addresses both the principles and guidelines of health information management and focuses on the integrated approach of informatics. In today's complex health system it is important for the nurse to have an understanding of the information management process; compiling, disseminating and maintaining crucial data. Students will evaluate informatics as it applies to patient safety, decision making and importance in the evaluation of measurements and patient outcomes.

Course Objectives:
  • Identify and discuss application in today's health care field.
  • Explain the role of accreditation and its significance to health care organizations.
  • Analyze the social, ethical, and legal issues associated with technologies used in healthcare delivery.
  • Compare and contrast legal and ethical standards and principles in the field of informatics.
  • Identify and discuss the educational and certification requirements of the health information management profession.
  • Clarify the interrelationship between confidentiality and privacy as relate to information management.
  • Recognize the key role clinician's play in the design, selection, implementation and evaluation of applications/systems in health care
  • Evaluate the electronic health record (EHR) and it's impact on patient care delivery.
  • Analyze the social, ethical, and legal issues associated with technologies used in healthcare delivery.
  • Analyze the impact of data, information, and knowledge within the context of informatics on patient care delivery.
  • In addition to course objectives, there are specific learning objectives for each topic / module in the course.
